Somalia’s Parliament Speaker Steps Down Following Election as Southwest State Leader

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur, has officially stepped down from his position after being elected as the leader of Southwest State.

The outgoing speaker formally handed over his responsibilities to First Deputy Speaker Sadiya Yasin Samatar, who will serve as Acting Speaker until lawmakers elect a new speaker to lead the lower house of parliament.

Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur’s resignation follows his successful bid for the presidency of Southwest State, one of Somalia’s federal member states.

His transition from the national legislature to regional leadership marks a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.Under parliamentary procedures, the Deputy Speaker assumes the role on an interim basis until a replacement is chosen through an election by members of parliament.

No date has yet been announced for the election of a new Speaker of the House of the People.The handover ensures continuity in parliamentary operations as Somalia’s federal parliament prepares for the process of selecting new leadership.
