Southwest State Presidential Candidates Boycott Election Polls

Two candidates contesting for the upcoming Southwest State presidential election have announced a boycott of the polls, demanding that fellow candidate and Speaker of Somalia’s Parliament, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe), relinquish his national leadership role.

Speaking at a press briefing in Baidoa, Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan and Abdiaziz Mohamed Osman Jawari said the electoral process would not be free and fair unless Sheikh Adan Madobe resigns from his position as Speaker of the Federal Parliament.

According to the timetable released by the electoral commission, the Southwest State presidential election is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 10.

The region recently conducted historic one-person, one-vote elections for local council representatives and members of the regional parliament. However, opposition political leaders rejected the outcome, alleging irregularities in the electoral process.
