Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan received a hero’s welcome from thousands of supporters upon his arrival in Mogadishu on Wednesday morning from Türkiye.
Artan had been expected to serve among the officials for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, his participation was thrown into doubt after he was reportedly denied entry to the United States upon arrival at Miami International Airport.
Thousands of football fans gathered at Aden Adde International Airport, chanting his name and cheering as he disembarked from a Turkish Airlines flight.
Speaking during a press briefing, Artan said he remains determined to pursue his dreams despite the setback.
“I will not give up on my ambitions,” he said, expressing hope that he will be selected among the match officials for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Artan also thanked the Somali government and FIFA for their continued support throughout his career.
The incident has sparked criticism among football fans, with many expressing concern over the treatment of officials and players ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
