Somalia’s Southwest State Parliament has elected Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur, widely known as Aden Madobe, as the region’s new president for a five-year term.
Madobe, who currently serves as Speaker of the Somali Federal Parliament, defeated his challenger, Abdiaziz Mohamed Jawari, in the vote.
Former Southwest State President Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan boycotted the election, arguing that the process was not democratic.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated Madobe on his victory. However, several opposition leaders criticized the election, describing it as a flawed process whose outcome had been predetermined.
Politicians allied with former Southwest State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen also rejected the election results and condemned the outcome.
